Areas Of Practice

Homer L. Deakins, Jr. has represented employers in various aspects of labor law and employment law. His traditional labor work has included representing non-union as well as union employers. His most significant labor work in the last few years was the representation of the City and County of Honolulu in negotiating a project labor agreement with the Building and Construction Trades Council for its $5 billion rail project. His employment work has primarily been in representing employers in the litigation of employment claims and class action cases.

Professional Experience

Homer began his career with Fulbright & Jaworski in the Houston office, specializing in labor law. After six years, he joined the law firm of Thompson Ogletree & Haynesworth , where, after one and one-half years, the firm name was changed to Thompson Ogletree Haynesworth & Deakins. In 1977, he became a founding partner of the law firm of Ogletree Deakins Smoak & Stewart, which in 1980 became the firm of Ogletree Deakins Nash Smoak & Stewart. Homer was the managing partner of the firm from 1985 - 2000. Since that time, he has been Chairman Emeritus of the firm and has continued to be active in the representation of private and public employers in labor and employment matters.

Professional Affiliations

During the late 1980's and early 1990's, Homer was involved in conducting mock trials of employment claims for the American Bar Association. These programs were conducted in numerous locations in California, Nevada, and Florida, including a mock trial during the National Convention of the ABA in San Francisco. He has served as the Georgia representative of the Eleventh Circuit for the last several years. In that capacity, he has participated in the Coral Gables, Florida programs, the conducting of seminars for younger lawyers in Atlanta and other programs for Fellows in Atlanta, including as moderator of the College's Program at the Labor and Employment Law Annual Meeting in Atlanta two years ago.
